QU SIS was very fortunate to be able to not only volunteer our services building a house, but we also were provided the opportunity to sit in a construction meeting and see behind the scenes of Habitat. 8 am our SIS team walks into the Habitat for Humanity "headquarters", as I like to think of it. The construction leaders are already half way through their meeting, having started at 7 am! Sitting through the meeting we all got to see how much truly goes into putting these houses together. The contractors work directly with the future homeowners to make it their perfect home.
The way Habitat works is not just building a family a house but the people in need actually pay for their homes. They are given a chance to purchase a home of their own, to their liking, they can choose what tiles, hardwood floors, panelling color, etc. to fancy their taste. Habitat gives people in need a chance to have a HOME that is affordable (with no interest) and everything that they want. Throughout the course of the build the homeowners can stop by and check the progress and interact with the contractors and volunteers. QU SIS was able to provide help with putting shingles on a roof, putting up drywall, and putting on finishing touches in two different homes. This experience was definitely difficult and a lot of hard work, but boy was it fun and amazing to actually see the progress day by day of these future homes.
